Hundreds of baby sharks spotted sunbathing at Great Barrier Island

Hundreds of sharks have been spotted sunbathing in shallow waters off Great Barrier Island, located in the outer Hauraki Gulf.

Incredible drone footage shared to a local Facebook page shows the juvenile sharks swimming close to the shore of Tryphena, a town on the island.

Several different species can be seen in the footage, the distinctive shape of hammerhead sharks easy to spot in the crystal-clear water.

Many locals were happy to see the sharks in such great numbers, saying it indicates a thriving population.
