Kawerau residents are being urged to boil their water.

The statement was released by Toi Te Ora Public Health after a routine sampling result of the Kawerau District Council drinking water supply showed the presence of E.coli bacteria.

All residents connected to the Kawerau District Council water supply are advised to boil all tap water intended for consumption.

This includes water used for drinking, cooking and brushing teeth.

The organisation advises residents to bring tap water to a full rolling boil, let it boil for one minute, and then let it cool before using.

They said that heating water to a full rolling boiling for one minute will make it safe to consume.

Residents do not need to boil water used for washing clothes or taking a bath or shower.

Some strains of E.coli bacteria can cause diarrhea, fever, vomiting and more in humans.
