Museum in waka shape proposed for Auckland waterfront

First, it was a waterfront stadium, now plans have been revealed for a museum at Auckland's Wynyard Point.

The building, in the shape of a waka, has been designed by Archimedia and celebrates the legends of New Zealand history.

Suspended above the ground, the museum features exhibition space, offices and even a restaurant.

"We have actually got to have a discussion about our waterfront as Aucklanders and that is what excites me, that proposals like this, exciting proposals like this, spawn the conversation, they ignite the imagination," says Auckland Councillor Chris Darby.

The plan is unofficial, but designers say they are keen to put the proposal before the Mayor and Council.
