New Zealand Police have revealed the most stolen cars over the past six months, with one popular vehicle beating the others to the unwanted position of first place.

The reliable and sturdy Toyota Hilux has come out on top as the most stolen vehicle, with 156 stolen across New Zealand.

Coming in second with 104 steals, the Holden Commodore also proved to be popular with car thieves.

With 88 steals in the past six months, the Subaru Legacy came third, a vast comparison to its ninth place in a 2019 AA insurance list of most frequently stolen cars.

The fourth most frequently stolen car was the Ford Courier which has gained popularity since 2019.

In 2019 it was ranked as the seventh most stolen car in New Zealand.

In July 2019, the Honda Torneo was the most stolen car in New Zealand. However, this year the Honda Torneos didn't make the Police's list.

The oldest vehicle reported stolen on this list was a 1929 DeSoto Series K. It has a current valuation of around $50,000.

Interestingly the newest vehicles to be stolen from 2019 appear to be trailers.

AA has advised the public to lock their cars, hide your valuables, find a safer park, park in a well-lit area where people will see your car.

"Be extra vigilant over weekends and during warmer weather when there are more thefts reported."
