One person has died and another is seriously injured following a two-car collision near Lake Karapiro, Waikato.
The vehicles crashed on State Highway 29 shortly before 2pm on Sunday.
At 4:20pm, police confirmed a person died at the scene.
Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision.
A section of SH29 remains closed in Piarere near Totman Road and east of Hinuera Quarry, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) confirmed on Twitter.
"Road users are advised to detour via #SH27 and #SH1 or be prepared for delays," it said.
Diversions remain in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
The Serious Crash Unit has been notified.
