A person has died on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
Police were notified of a sudden death just after midday.
A helicopter has been sent to help recover the body, police told Newshub.
A St John spokeswoman told NZME crews had been called to Tongariro National Park.
Local iwi are in the process of placing a rāhui on the crossing with leaders on their way to the mountain.
The weather at the site changes dramatically with the seasons, resulting in a wide variety of environments, according to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing website.
Newshub has contacted local iwi for comment.
