A 25-year-old man who struck a police car's bonnet with an axe and fled the scene "at speed" in Rotorua has been arrested.

Police pulled over a "vehicle of interest" on Thursday at about 4:30pm, and the alleged incident followed, police said in a statement. The male driver returned to his car and sped away, and a pursuit began.

The chase was abandoned after the fleeing vehicle allegedly rammed another police car at a roundabout on State Highway 5 at Devon St.

Police said they found the alleged vehicle on Paradise Valley Rd and followed it while road spikes and cordons were being put in place. Another police car was then allegedly rammed and two police officers sustained minor injuries.

The fleeing vehicle was spiked along Paradise Valley Rd and came to a stop on State Highway 5.

Police said the driver got out of the car and allegedly attempted to steal a vehicle belonging to a member of the public, but he was tasered and arrested by armed police.

Police are making further inquiries into the incident.
