Counties Manukau Police were surprised after finding a little "cat burglar" stowed away in a vehicle engine.

Police attended a van breakdown on Plunket Ave, Papatoetoe on Friday.

According to a New Zealand Police Facebook post, the vehicle had broken down in the middle of the road.

On further investigation, Constables Wienk and Alexander discovered a small kitten stowed away in the engine compartment.

The cat was described as a grey tabby, about 20cm tall and 30cm long.

"Just another day's work on the feline - whoops, we mean frontline," posted the New Zealand Police.

The cat has since been taken to the SPCA.
