A search and rescue team is working with the department of conservation and a jet boat crew to look for a missing 23-year-old who fell into the Hokitika River.
Emergency services were called to Kokatahi just before 1pm on Saturday. They searched until nightfall, without success.
The man reportedly fell from rocks at the Hokitika Gorge, and failed to resurface.
The police dive squad is expected to be deployed Sunday morning.
