The Lake Taupō community will gather later on Wednesday to discuss a series of arsons that are causing sleepless nights for residents in the area.

Two homes were destroyed in five early-morning fires earlier this month.

"People are sleeping in these homes and we just kind of want this to stop," says Senior Sergeant Phil Edwards.

He says the hui is about reassuring residents and giving prevention advice.

"Just provide a bit of support for them, they're feeling a bit vulnerable at the moment - and it's important for us down in Taupō that we all come together."

Snr Sgt Edwards said there are no strong leads at this stage.

"We're just trying to establish some movements of vehicles through State Highway 1 and just trying to locate a few people that we've seen on CCTV. We're keeping an open mind but for now, we believe that we're looking for one person."

The hui is being held at the Waitetoko Marae.
