A search for two missing paua divers is underway in the Wairarapa.

The pair failed to return to shore near Mataikona earlier on Friday.

Crews will search until dark - and police say the mission will recommence in the morning if they do not find them on Friday night.

Sergeant Anthony Matheson said the initial search included two helicopters and the Lady Elizabeth IV launch among other parties - including private fishing vessels.

"We currently have the Lady Elizabeth and one helicopter still searching," Sgt Matheson said on Friday evening.

After the holiday period, Water Safety New Zealand chief executive Jonty Mills issued a warning to beachgoers, saying oceans and rivers needed to be treated with respect.

Mills urged beachgoers to swim between the flags where possible, watch out for rips and to wear lifejackets while fishing from rocks or while on a boat.
