Weather: 'Stunning' Auckland Anniversary Day kicks off hot week

It's time to hit the beach as a "stunning" Auckland Anniversary Day kicks off a hot and settled week for New Zealand.

"A ridge of high pressure has dug its heels in and is sticking around over the North Island causing the weather to remain very similar as we start the working week," MetService says on Facebook.

"The main focus is the temperatures that continue to resemble more summery weather with centres across the country expected to reach around 30C or higher today and much of the week."

NIWA says Auckland is in for a "stunning summer day" with a mix of sun and clouds and a high near 25C.

But there's also an increased risk of sunburns, with the UV index expected to reach "extreme" levels after 1pm.

In the South Island, a weak front brings some wet weather - mainly to the west coast.

MetService says some isolated afternoon showers are forecast for remote mountainous areas in the North and South Island on Monday and Tuesday.
