The seven-year-old boy who drowned after being swept out to sea in Napier on Friday has been named.

He was Marama Te Pou.

Marewa School confirmed in a Facebook post on Sunday it was Marama who died after the accident at Marine Parade.

It is understood he was playing at the water's edge before he was swept out.

The statement from Marewa School says: "It is with the deepest regret that I have to inform you of the death of one of our students in a tragic accident on Friday night.

"The whanau have asked me to let the wider community know that Marama Te Pou has sadly passed away after a tragic accident on Marine Parade. Marama is lying with whanau in Hastings.

"I know your thoughts and prayers are with the whanau in this toughest of times."

The statement also says Marama was a beloved son of Liana Te Pou and Marama Te Waa, and a much-loved brother of Neshaiah, Chaz, Mithias, Autumn, Sapphire, Cedar, Shavaughn, Nathan, Halo and his twin Te Whetu Kotahi.

Marama's service will be held on Tuesday before he is laid to rest at Mangaroa Cemetery.
