It was a busy night for firefighters across the country.
Firefighters have saved 10 homes following a major scrub fire in Christchurch.
Helicopters, eight tankers and seven appliances were called in to tackle the 40-hectare inferno. It burnt through grass and shelterbelts, before making its way to a pine tree plantation on the corner of Waterholes Road and State Highway 1, near Rolleston.
Crews contained the fire at 11pm on Thursday night but there was damage to a hay barn, a double garage and minor paint blistering to properties.
In Wiri, Auckland, 50 firefighters battled a large fire at a commercial property. It was contained at around 2am on Friday.
There was also a house fire in Wanaka too. Volunteer firefighters tackled flames in an upstairs bedroom. A specialist fire investigator will determine the cause this morning.
