One injured after gang members wield baseball bats in Napier brawl

Police say the violent fight in Napier which hospitalised one person earlier today was between members of the same gang.

Emergency services responded to a large fight between gang members in Maraenui, Napier, just after midday.

NZME reports that those involved in the fight used baseball bats.

"We received a report of disorder - around 15 people fighting on Percy Spiller Ave," a police spokesperson told Newshub.

"One person is reported to have moderate injuries."

A police spokesperson told Newshub those involved were all members of the same gang.

There have been concerns around rising gang tensions in the area after shots were fired in Taradale last month.

Following that incident, about 250 Hawke's Bay residents attended a public meeting in response to the recent tensions.

Members of the community said they were concerned for their safety as the gang tensions escalated into firearms incidents.

"People not patches, whānau not gangs, all need to collectively work together," Hawke's Bay Mayor Kirsten Wise said.
