Fire crews contain North Island blaze

Helicopters on Sunday morning returned to a large forest fire which burned through about 80 hectares south of Whanganui.

The blaze broke out on Saturday at Brandon Hall Rd but has now been contained, Fire and Emergency New Zealand says.

Overnight, the fire was moving in a north-easterly direction towards State Highway 3 and there's been a significant smoke drift through Manawatu and central Hawke's Bay.

On Saturday evening, three water tankers and 11 fire crews were initially called to the scene.

Video sent to Newshub on Saturday showed a large plume of grey smoke in the sky. A witness said he had seen about five fire trucks heading towards a fire north of Palmerston North.

There were no reports of injury.
