A homicide investigation has been launched following a shooting in Northland on Monday night.
Police rushed to the corner of Heke and Hongi streets in Kaikohe at about 8:45pm after receiving reports that a weapon had been fired. Upon arriving, a man was found in a vehicle in a critical condition.
The man was airlifted to Auckland City Hospital but died on the way, according to acting Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Dalzell.
Police are currently speaking to one person in relation to the investigation. No one else is being sought.
“Our investigation is still in its early stages and a further update will be provided once there is further information is available," said Det Snr Sgt Dalzell.
A scene guard stayed at the scene overnight, with an examination to be carried out on Tuesday.
