A massive blaze at a car wrecker yard near Rotorua has been contained.

At about 7:10pm on Tuesday, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews rushed to the scene of the large fire at an auto dismantler on Wikaraka St, Ngongotahā.

Twenty-two fire crews were required to tackle the blaze, with firefighters coming from other centres, including Rotorua, Tirau, Kawerau, and Mt Maunganui.

The fire was contained late on Tuesday and crews began working on extinguishing hotspots.

Drone footage of the scene shows a large section of the car wreckers affected by the inferno with vehicles engulfed in fire. Firefighters attempt to hose down the blaze from above.

At the time, FENZ asked locals to avoid the area and for those living downwind to stay indoors and keep their windows closed.
