Large scrub fire near Christchurch closes section of State Highway 1

A large scrub fire near Christchurch has closed a section of State Highway 1 and burnt through 40 hectares.

The intersection of Main South Road and Waterholes Road in Rolleston is closed and drivers are asked to avoid the area.

The blaze broke out at 4:30pm on Thursday.

Four helicopters, eight tankers and seven appliances are at the scene of the fire. The flames have burnt through grass and hedges and at one point up to 10 houses were threatened by the blaze.

All homes have been protected by Fire and Emergency and officials say people are safe to remain in their houses, but are advised to keep their windows and doors closed due to smoke hazards.

Fire crews will remain on the scene overnight.

There have been no reports of injuries.
