Friday's confirmation that New Zealand has its first case of coronavirus led to panic-buying at supermarkets across Auckland.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield has said preparation is necessary, but people shouldn't panic.

"Keep this in perspective, it is a single case. Yes, prepare, make sure you have got what you need. But there is no need to ensure you have everything stocked up in the cupboard by the end of this weekend."

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has also called for calm.
