One person has died following a serious crash on State Highway 3 near Mangakowhai Road, Piopio in King Country.
The crash was reported to police around 12:40pm.
Police confirmed another person sustained serious injuries.
State Highway 3 remains closed while the serious crash unit investigates the scene, police said.
Diversions have been put in place at Ruru Street, Piopio to the south, and Tikitiki Road to the north.
The NZ Transport Agency said motorists should add 40 minutes extra to travel the detour or avoid the road.
