The man shot dead by police on February 13 in Tauranga after a car chase through the city centre can now be named.

He was Anthony John Fane, 33, from Tauranga.

His death has been referred to the Coroner and a critical incident investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

The shooting occurred when police tried to stop a vehicle on Carmichael Rd in relation to an ongoing double-homicide inquiry.

The car didn't stop and shots were fired at police from the vehicle before it fled through the CBD.

The vehicle then stopped and a person continued to discharge their firearm.

Police returned fire and in the exchange the offender was fatally wounded.

Car linked to homicide inquiry
