Users urged to ride responsibly as Uber electric bikes hit Auckland's streets

Uber says if its new e-bikes are to succeed people need to ride them responsibly.

The company's new JUMP bikes launched in Auckland this month, with all 655 of the vehicles to be rolled out on the city's streets by March.

Renting the dockless bikes works just like it does with scooters, with users able to hire them via the Uber application.

JUMP's general manager in New Zealand Henry Greenacre says he hopes people will use the bikes safely.

"Our responsibility is to put the safest possible product on the road but at the end of the day it often comes down to people using them responsibly and not being idiots on them."
