Power has returned to Wellington after an outage left tens of thousands of households in the dark.

A Wellington Electricity spokesperson told Newshub 63,000 customers were impacted across the Hutt Valley and the Wairarapa.

The fault occurred at the Haywards Substation just before 9am on Thursday.  By 10am, all customers had their power back.

Trains from Wellington to Melling, Upper Hutt and Masterton are all suspended due to the outage and buses will replace trains.

Wellington Water says the outage affected drinking water and wastewater pump stations.

"We are asking people to reduce their water use and to avoid flushing the toilet until the power is returned," a spokesperson said in a post on Facebook.
