Coronavirus: Parent of student at Auckland's Ponsonby Primary tests positive

The parent of a student at Auckland's Ponsonby Primary School has tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19.

In an email to Newshub, board of trustees chairman Alan Webb confirmed the case and said they were following expert advice.

"I have been in regular contact with our principal and the board has been kept fully informed," Webb said.

Newshub has contacted the Ministry of Education for comment.

In an email sent to parents, principal Sanjay Rama said the school did not need to close.

"I fully understand you will be concerned but I can reiterate what MOE [Ministry of Education] and the Health Department have said, that we do not need to close the school, as the child who attends our school has shown no symptoms.

"The family is however in isolation and being monitored.

"As we have a teacher only day tomorrow [Friday], the school will be fully cleaned and surfaces disinfected and if we get any updates on this or further cases, you will be the first to know."

Rama said it was a difficult time for the family involved.

"We ask that you respect their privacy if you do know them," he said.
