Coronavirus: Pukekohe Intermediate School to close after pupil tested for COVID-19

An Auckland school is set to close on Monday after one of its students was tested for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).

Pukekohe Intermediate School will be closed from Monday as a precautionary measure, the school confirmed to Newshub.

The new pupil was reportedly tested for COVID-19 on Thursday after showing symptoms.

"As of today, we have a new student to our school present with symptoms. This student was tested today, and we are awaiting the results. We will provide you with more information as this comes to hand," the intermediate posted to its Facebook page.

"We have contacted the Ministry of Health and are following recommendations and will keep you informed."

The Ministry of Education is currently not preparing for widespread school closures amid the outbreak.

Auckland's Herne Bay Playcentre and Opunake Playcentre in Taranaki have both closed as a preventative measure. On Thursday, 150 students at Dunedin's Logan Park High School were tested and cleared of having the virus after one of their peers tested positive.

On Thursday, Green Bay High School in Auckland confirmed one of its teachers was self-isolating and had been tested for COVID-19. A relative of the teacher's flatmate is one of the country's 28 confirmed cases.
