Coronavirus: Selwyn Mayor to drop-off groceries to self-isolated residents

A Canterbury mayor is playing his part in helping locals who have to self-isolate amid the coronavirus crisis.

Selwyn District Mayor Sam Broughton is offering to pick up grocery orders from Countdown next Wednesday and drop them off at their door.

The offer is available to anyone self-isolating in the Darfield area, a rural town in the district.

"Countdown Rolleston is taking pick up orders for Wednesday next week. If you are in self-isolation due to COVID-19 and live in the Darfield area I can collect your order from Countdown Rolleston at 6pm and bring to your door next Wednesday evening," he said in a Facebook post.

"I will limit this to the first six confirmed orders to ensure I can deliver in good time. There are a number of conditions obviously but if you would like the help please email."

On Thursday, coronavirus cases rose by eight for the second day in a row, with health authorities expecting more in the coming days.

The latest confirmed cases are related to overseas travel, and are in Southland, Taranaki, Auckland, Rotorua, and Northland.

Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield told reporters one of them is in hospital, and the others at home in self-isolation.
