Coronavirus: Wellington hotel offers rooms for $1 per night

An inner-city Wellington hotel is offering three-night getaways for as little as $1 per night - but there's a catch.

The Park Hotel announced the "pay what you can afford" offer to people who have been forced to cancel their international holidays due to the COVID-19 coronavirus so they can stay somewhere.

Anyone from in or near Wellington is eligible for the deal, and people can pick from 90 weekend room nights for between March 20 and August 31.

"There will be a lot of disappointed Wellingtonians who have saved up for a long time for their dream holiday, and may have had to make the difficult decision to cancel and forgo a refund," a hotel spokesperson said.

"We wanted to put something out there that didn't mean double jeopardy for people with no holiday and no refund. We acknowledge it's not the same as going overseas, but it's our little bit to reach out."

The hotel will provide guests with free use of the Les Mills gym and free hire of e-bikes to get around Wellington.

The spokesperson says they are confident people will be sincere and honest when taking up the offer and will only pay what they can afford right now. Some of the rooms have been ring-fenced for public sector workers and other groups who are "especially affected".

Bookings open at 9:30am on Monday and the deal will be available for 48 hours or until all rooms are taken.
