A man has been arrested by police after a chase that resulted in him crashing into parked cars and stealing another vehicle.

The man - a 29-year-old - initially crashed into several parked cars with a stolen vehicle on Wrights Rd in the suburb of Addington, about 8:10am.

He then ditched the first stolen car and stole a second from the scene of the collision.

Acting Christchurch Metro Commander Inspector Victoria Walker said the man was eventually stopped and arrested on Sherborne St in the suburb of St Albans, about 9:25am.

Insp Walker said no-one was injured as the incident unfolded.

"Police received multiple calls from concerned members of the public about the manner of the driving of the stolen Hyundai vehicle," she said, adding those calls proved "invaluable".

Charges have yet to be laid.
