Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has announced Auckland Council's closure of key city facilities in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Mayor made the announcement during a press conference on Friday.

Auckland Council pools, leisure centres and libraries, as well as the Maritime Museum and Art Gallery, will be closed for two weeks starting later on Friday.

The closures may be extended based on future developments.

Eight additional cases of COVID-19 were confirmed on Thursday, bringing New Zealand's total to 28.

The Ministry of Health reiterates each case was contracted through overseas travel and there is currently no evidence of community transmission in New Zealand.
