An Auckland Sikh community has stepped up to help those in need amid the COVID-19 pandemic, feeding thousands of hungry families.

The Supreme Sikh Society has already provided food packages to 3500 families and on Friday afternoon they're continuing their good work.

Anyone in need of a food package is encouraged to head down to the Takanini Gurudwara Sikh Temple at 70 Takanini School Road between 4pm and 6pm.

The packages, designed to feed a family for three to four days, will be given out using a contactless drive-through method.

As people drive up, the food bags will be placed in their cars by volunteers and then they can drive out.

All the food provided is free of charge and the bag contains fruit, vegetables, milk and bread among other items.

"Our motive is to serve everyone regardless of nationality, cast, religion or gender," reads a post on the organisation's Facebook page.

The Sikh community have also stepped in to help vulnerable people in Australia.

Sikh Volunteers Australia have been preparing home cooked meals and delivering them to people who are in isolation due to COVID-19.

The group will deliver food across Melbourne's south-east for the next two weeks.
