Driver survives horrific crash near Rotorua, taken to hospital

A driver has survived a horrific crash near Rotorua after their hatchback plunged into a ditch on Wednesday afternoon.

Photos sent to Newshub show the car wedged into the ground on State Highway 33, with the roadside barrier arm crumpled to the side and the engine left on the bank.

Police confirmed they were called to the area at about 3:45pm following reports a single-occupant car went into a ditch between Parkcliff Rd and Banksia Pl. No road closures or diversions were required.

One ambulance was sent and transported the patient, who is in a serious condition, to Rotorua Hospital, St John says.
