Magnitude 4.5 earthquake felt by thousands near East Coast

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake struck 35 km east of Taihape on Tuesday afternoon.

It occurred at a depth of 28 km at 5:38pm and the shaking was described by GeoNet as "light".

So far, 2823 people reported to GeoNet they felt the earthquake. One person claimed it felt 'extreme', while the majority have said it felt 'weak' or 'light'.

On Facebook, one person said it was a "good shake" and another wrote it was a "good size here in Hastings".

Most people who submitted to GeoNet that they felt it were across the lower North Island, but some as north as Tauranga and as south as Christchurch also claimed to have felt it.
