Man dies after being shot by police in Papatoetoe, Auckland

A person was fatally shot by police in Auckland overnight.

A man with a machete was smashing windows and cutting power lines in Papatoetoe just after 1am.

"He's broken a number of windows, he's damaged vehicles... he was seen cutting at the powerlines," said Supt Jill Rogers. "We also received calls to suggest he'd been at an incident earlier."

Police say he was approached by a police dog handler, but didn't back down.

He was then shot, suffered a cardiac arrest and died at the scene.

"Despite first aid being applied... he hasn't survived."

Next-of-kin are being notified.
