Massive inferno rips through Auckland car yard after explosion, up to 15 cars on fire

A massive blaze ripped through multiple cars at an Auckland wrecker's yard on Thursday morning, lighting up the suburb.

Video footage and images captured at a New Lynn car yard on Great North Rd shows a giant inferno devouring cars, with a large plume of smoke filling the sky. The orange hue from the fire lit up the west Auckland suburb.

Fire and Emergency told Newshub they received multiple reports of an explosion in the area just after 1am on Thursday morning. Between 12 and 15 cars were found on fire.

Four crews attended the scene and were dampening down hot spots by 2:40am. They had left the area by 5:35am.

There have been no reports of any injuries.

One person posted on Facebook "New Lynn on FIRE", while another said they thought they had heard two blasts.

"Around 1am we woke to bangs we thought someone was shooting something and we looked out side and saw the huge plume of smoke coming from over by the bridge. The explosions just kept coming," added another user.
