North Island New World customers will now pack their groceries once they have left the store amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Foodstuffs announced the temporary changes on Friday night saying it will speed up the process for everyone using the store.

"Customers are temporarily being asked not to pack their groceries into their reusable bags at check out," they said.

"Instead we ask shoppers to load their groceries back into the trolley and pack it into their bags at the car.

"The main reason for this is to help customers move through the checkout process quicker, hence reducing the amount of time spent in-store – this, in turn, speeds up the process for everyone and allows us to significantly reduce customer queues outside stores."

Customers have been queuing up outside supermarkets around New Zealand due to strict rules for physical distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Foodstuffs said it is important to keep ourselves, family, friends and essential workers safe from COVID-19.

"The less time we spend with our fellow Kiwis right now the better.

"We appreciate this is challenging but it is important to follow this guidance so we can limit the spread of COVID-19. Help us, help you."

Foodstuffs workers in PAK'nSAVE, New World and Four Square brands were also recently given a 10 percent allowance on top of their hourly pay.

This is for the hours worked during the alert level four lockdown.

"We are operating in extraordinary times and as the situation evolves, we learn and determine more about what we can do next as a business to support our people and New Zealand," the CEO of Foodstuffs North Island Chris Quin said at the time.

"We will remain open for New Zealanders throughout the lockdown and in order to do so, we need our key employees on the front-line and throughout the supply chain.

"We've been totally focused on keeping shelves full and ensuring our customers and teams are safe. Now that we have a better handle on these things, it's time to clear up how we're supporting our committed and essential team members."
