Police have released a photo of the couple wanted for questioning after a woman allegedly spat at Auckland Transport (AT) workers.

On Friday morning the woman was joyriding on the train with a man when they were told to get off by three transport officers. She then allegedly spat at them.

Police have posted a surveillance image of the pair and are seeking help to identify them.

"Police are appalled at this type of behaviour, especially in the current environment, which places essential workers at risk. This type of behaviour will not be tolerated by police," a spokesperson says.

"Anyone with information about the identity of these people is asked to contact Auckland City Police on 105 quoting file number 200417/7577 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. You can also send us a private Facebook message."

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has slammed the behaviour, which is putting essential workers at risk during the pandemic.

"That sort of behaviour is disgusting at any time, but at a time with COVID-19 it's also dangerous behaviour," Goff says.

"The individuals should face the full penalties under the law and I have no doubt that the police will be taking this matter very seriously."

During New Zealand's alert level 4 all AT's public transport is free, but it is only to be used by essential workers and the public completing essential errands such as medical appointments and food shopping.
