Rotorua locals are bringing joy to New Zealanders stuck in lockdown with their lament in Māori for a meal at McDonald's.

A resident posted the video to her Facebook page on Monday, just after Jacinda Ardern announced the end of New Zealand's lockdown on April 27.

Once the country moves to alert level 3 food businesses, including McDonald's, will be able to reopen for takeaways.

Te Ao Māori News reported the video is of cousins Murray Bidois and Te Taepa Kameta who wanted to lift morale with their "whakatangitangi, or laments to and from McDonald's".

Their translation of the song reads: "I cry a lonesome lament, for you my dear one, my friend Ronald, oh the distress".

Kameta responds with: "Cry not your lament oh Takurua, your wait is only but one week more. We shall be united once again my dear friend McMurray".

The video on Kararaina Bidois' Facebook page now has over 3400 views and 900 comments with commenters calling it "lighthearted" and "hilarious".

"Only in Rotorua," one commenter wrote.

"Beautiful set of "pipes" you fullas. A good sense of humour and some Maccas all the way," another said.

One person said McDonald's should give the pair some free vouchers for the performance.

Under alert level 3 New Zealanders will be able to get takeaways from any food outlets that wish to reopen but will be encouraged to use no-contact payment systems.

This will allow some businesses to earn an income, pay employees and recoup some losses.

Other New Zealanders are still encouraged to work and learn from home.

Travel is also still strictly limited to work, school, exercising or getting essentials and bubbles can only be slightly increased.
