One New Zealand man has taken DIY personal protective equipment to the next level by putting a beer box over his head in place of a face mask.

Jess Maddison posted a video of the man to her TikTok page with the caption "No face mask? No worries."

The man is wearing a Heineken 12-pack beer box on his head while shopping at a Countdown with a young boy.

He is assisted by an employee at a self-service checkout where he tries to buy another box of Heineken, which Maddison jokes could be a new face mask for the boy.

But experts are warning that face masks, bought or DIY, may not prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Ministry of Health is currently following advice from the World Health Organization which says only people who have COVID-19 or are caring for someone with the virus need to wear face masks.

Instead, they recommend regularly washing hands for 20 seconds and staying home if you are sick as the most effective ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Dr Siouxsie Wiles is also warning that people who wear face masks may get a false sense of security from the protective gear and slack off on other hygiene practices.

Wearing a face mask will not completely protect people from COVID-19, but will help to prevent the spread orally.
