Porirua residents in lockdown will be without television for the foreseeable future after a fire knocked out transmission equipment.

Police are investigating the blaze at a Kordia transmission site at Baxter's Knob which began in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The fire was extinguished but not before it caused "extensive damage" according to Kordia's head of communications Sally Vernon.

"As a result, television service to residents in the Porirua region and some telecommunications services have been put off air," she told Newshub.

There is no indication of when the services will be back online.

"The exact timing is dependent on release of the site by the authorities, weather, safe site access, the full extent of the damage, and our ability to work within COVID-19 constraints," said Vernon.

Kordia would not comment on the nature of the fire.

Police told Newshub initial indications were that the fire was an electrical fault, but investigations are ongoing.
