An Auckland man has been sent to prison for five years after being found guilty of historical sexual offences against two young boys.

Dennis Pierrepont Brimble, 63, was sentenced at Auckland District Court on Tuesday, after being found guilty of seven charges of sexual offending in January.

The charges relate to offences involving a 14-year-old boy in west Auckland in 1984, and an 11-year-old boy on Auckland's North Shore in 2001.

Brimble worked as a music teacher in both areas after moving to New Zealand from Australia.

Detective Constable Murray Spiers of Waitemata Police thanked both the victims for their involvement in Brimble's conviction, and commended them for their bravery and courage.

He urges anyone who has information and wants to speak with police regarding these matters to contact him at the Waitemata Adult Sexual Assault Team on 021 191 4207 or murray.spiers@police.govt.nz.

Paedophilia is a major problem in New Zealand. Last year, Newshub revealed there were 50,000 clicks every day from New Zealanders trying to access child sex images.

The police squad tasked with catching child sex offenders last month said children are at greater risk of paedophiles during the lockdown.

It comes amid a rise in child sex offences during lockdowns in other countries.
