Police have discovered a body in a patch of bush in west Auckland.

The body, which was found in a section of trees on Epping Rd in Henderson, is believed to have belonged to a missing person.

On Friday afternoon, police staff were in the area conducting enquiries into the missing person case when the body was discovered nearby.

However, police are unable to confirm it is the missing person until a formal identification process has taken place. Until then, they will not reveal the person's identity.

Waitematā West CIB Detective Senior Sergeant Tim Williams told Newshub that process is expected to take some time to be completed.

The area the body was located has now been cordoned off, and a scene guard will remain in place overnight until a further examination is carried out on Saturday.

Police enquiries will continue into the weekend.
