Businesses prepare their social distancing protocol as alert level 2 announcement looms

Businesses are eager to open their doors again when New Zealand moves to alert level 2, but getting back to business will be far from normal.

Companies around the country are planning to implement new social distancing measures and cleaning to procedures to minimise the risk of COVID-19.

Les Mills Head of Operations Brett Sutton says customers should expect their gyms to be much less busy when they reopen.

"So in our studios, we have markings on the floors that help dictate where people stand and go for their workout, so they'll be at least 2 metres apart," Sutton says.

In some studios, the amount of equipment available to customers will be halved and it will all be sanitised.

Les Mills is also considering extra health and safety precautions like Perspex screens in front of instructors, and possibly requiring everyone to wear a mask.

However, their current concern is the Government's rules on how many people are allowed in.

The ban on mass gatherings of more than 100 people could prove difficult if it means per building, not per studio.

Greg Hartford, the CEO of Retail NZ says it would prose a challenge to the retail sector too.

"There are lots of retail businesses that would typically have more than 100 staff on-site, let alone customers coming through the door. So there need to be spacing requirements and perhaps a certain number of people per square metre."

That rule should be made clear when the Government announces more detail about alert level 2 on Thursday before deciding when the country will move there on Monday.

In the meantime, hairdressers have made headway on what it will look like in their salons.

NZ Association of Registered Hairdressers chair Niq James says they also have social distancing measures in place.

"We'll have to change the layouts of the salons a little bit more so we can keep people apart. We'll be doing a little bit of PPE as well."

So if you're desperate for a cut or some cardio, best you get prepared for things to look a little different.
