Coronavirus: The highs and lows of homeschooling through lockdown

Friday marks the last day of homeschooling for thousands of children and parents across the country.

While juggling home, work and school life hasn't always been easy, most are heralding it a success.

Friday was the last day for most Kiwi kids doing their schooling at the dinner table, the last day for parents being employees, teachers, cooks and cleaners.

Dad Johnny McFarlane says it's taken time to adjust.

"Working from home has been pretty awesome lately - the first three weeks were a complete shambles trying to mix up work with schooling," McFarlane told Newshub.

But generally, all are hailing the learning from home a success.

Paparoa Street School Principal Pene Abbie says the experience has been a huge success.

"We're really thrilled with what's happened for us, particularly with the parental support to help children engage with the learning and the depth that the teachers have gone to in a really quick time."

There have been highs and there have been lows with many families not getting the Government issue laptops and work from home packs they were promised.

The Government admits it wasn't perfect but says its focus was on NCEA students at low decile schools - all of whom received some sort of aid.

Luckily for those who may have found studying at home tricky, NCEA exams have now been pushed out to give students extra time.

And now there's excitement at every level - teachers, parents and children - about getting back to school on Monday.
