The Deputy Police Commissioner has announced he will retire after more than four decades with the force.

Mike Clement shared the news on Friday afternoon saying working for the police has been "a pleasure".

"I'm incredibly proud of this organisation and what we represent and grateful for the many opportunities and experiences I have had throughout my career."

Deputy Commissioner Clement led the police management of the firearms law reform following the march 15 terrorist attacks, and played a key role in the response to the Whakaari/White Island eruption response.

Police Commissioner Andrew Coster commended him, saying "his integrity is his hallmark".

"I wish Mike all the best for a well-earned and happy retirement with his family, who have had to share him with us for so long."

Deputy Commissioner Clement will finish up his role at the end of June.
