Man arrested after firing at police, leading them in frantic chase across Bay of Plenty

A man has been arrested after a frantic police chase which saw shots fired from both sides.

The chase began at 11:25am on Wednesday when police attended a Kawerau address to arrest a man.

The offender in question sped off from the house before he could be caught by police, who immediately gave chase.

Police sped after the man towards nearby Te Teko and managed to spike the car - at this point the man shot at police and they returned fire.

The man then stole another car and sped back towards Kawerau.

One Kawerau resident told Newshub the offender's car smashed into her friend's house during the frantic chase.

Pictures supplied to Newshub show the siding of the home smashed, and a scraped black car with a shattered back windscreen in the garden.

Police say the man was eventually tracked to a residential home in Kawerau and arrested at 2pm.

Video of his arrest shows a street crowded with police and onlookers. As the man is led out of the house cries of "sieg heil" can be heard echoing across the street.

Bystanders begin to bark at the man as he is put into the car, signalling their affiliation with the Mongrel Mob.

An investigation into the circumstances of the incident is underway and the Independent Police Conduct Authority will be notified.

State Highway 30 is closed east of the Rangitaiki River as police examine the scene - motorists are advised to avoid the area.
