A recovery operation is underway after a man's body was found on a clifftop track at Cape Farewell on Sunday.

Police say it received a call on Saturday afternoon after personal items were found on a track. A drone was then deployed to survey the area and a body was found "some way down the cliff".

Police Search and Rescue and an Alpine Cliff Rescue team are working to recover the body. The death will be referred to the Coroner.

This man's death isn't connected to the search for the missing trampers Dion Reynolds and Jessica O'Connor, who were hiking in nearby Kahurangi National Park.

They remain missing.
