New Zealand's 1492 coronavirus cases: Locations, regions without active cases, ages

It has been another week of daily COVID-19 cases in the single-digits - including two days of no cases - pushing New Zealand's total to 1492.

That can be broken down as 1142 confirmed cases, which is the number presented to the World Health Organization, and 350 probable cases.

Overall, 1368 people (92 percent) have recovered from the respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, while 183,039 people have been tested. That's 3.5 percent of the population, which the Ministry of Health says puts New Zealand in the top 20 countries per capita for testing.

Only two people remain in hospital, down from five this time last week, with none in intensive care. One person, a woman from the Rosewood Rest Home, died this week from the illness, taking New Zealand's total death toll to 21.

Where are the cases?

Several of the recently announced COVID-19 cases are linked to the St Margaret's Hospital and Rest Home in Auckland, with some being nurses who cared for patients from that cluster at Waitakere Hospital. Those new cases have pushed the Waitemata District Health Board's (DHB) total up, with it continuing to have the most cases of any DHB in the country. Bay of Plenty and Hutt Valley are among the DHBs now without any active cases.

New Zealand's two hospitalised cases can be found in Counties Manukau and Waitemata.

Transmission

There are five types of transmission reported in New Zealand:

  • Imported cases: Cases with a reported history of international travel within 14 days of the onset of their symptoms (38 percent)
  • Imported related cases: Cases that have a reported link (close contact or an epidemiological link) to an imported or overseas acquired case (32 percent)
  • Locally acquired cases, epidemiologically linked: Cases that have a reported link to a locally acquired case with an unknown source (25 percent)
  • Locally acquired cases, unknown source: Cases that have no reported history of international travel within 14 days of the onset of their symptoms and no recorded epidemiological link to a source case (4 percent)
  • Source under investigation (1 percent).

Clusters

New Zealand continues to have recorded 16 significant clusters, those being groups of 10 or more cases of COVID-19 where each case is linked to a central location or event.

There have been four clusters closed. The most recent being the George Manning Rest Home in Christchurch. A cluster is considered closed when there have been 28 consecutive days since the last reported case. This means there is no longer transmission of the virus within or associated with the cluster.

Many of New Zealand's clusters have unknown origins.
