A person has died after their car collided with a horse on Saturday night.
The vehicle struck the animal while driving on Te Teko Road, near Edgecumbe in the eastern Bay of Plenty. Police received a report of the crash at roughly 11:20pm.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.
A scene investigation was carried out by officers and the serious crash unit on Sunday morning.
A stretch of road remains closed between Okaahu Rd and Powell Rd, with diversions in place.
Motorists are advised to travel via Grieve Rd or Otakiri Rd.
The condition of the horse has not been released.
