Woman dies after being hit by train in Tawa, Wellington

A woman has died after being hit by a train in the Wellington suburb of Tawa.

The incident happened at around 12:55pm on Wednesday.

In a statement, a police spokesperson confirmed the train collided with the woman at a level crossing near the intersection of Hinau Street and McClellan Street. 

Cordons remain in place and police are making enquiries to establish the circumstances of the woman's death. 

All Kapiti line trains from Porirua to Wellington are currently suspended. 

The staff member involved has automatically been stood down and will be given counselling and support.
